The vision for the identity was to create an identity that would be able to be formed by both volunteers and visitors. Besides this, the identity should also pave way for a signage system for people to navigate around the island.
All elements in the visual identity represents a part of Ungdomsøen’s key visions, and contributes to having a visual expression everyone can contribute to and develop.
The typeface Sporting Grotesque is an open source typeface with unlimited licensing making it possible for every visitor and volunteer to use and distribute on the island. This part responds to Ungdomsøens vision for being open to everyone.
The illustrations where inspired by graffiti-tags and works as a fifth element that shakes up and disturbs the gridded typographic layouts. Again, everyone can contribute with their own illustrations and more vandalism only ads more expression to the identity. This corresponds with Ungdomsøen’s rebellious and challenging side of their visions.
Creating a visual identity that was open for anyone to take part of, not only created a unique visual identity, but also contributed to more community at the island. The design sparked workshops for kids and teenagers to visit the island and motivate them to use their creativity to leave a mark on the visual identity.
